Think of your most memorable grade school assembly. Having trouble coming up with something? That’s because they’re typically events for administrators to communicate something important, counteract bad behavior, memorialize a person or a holiday, or maybe feature a performance of some kind. They don’t usually feature a congresswoman—usually.
According to the CDC, 34.2 million Americans’ lives are affected by diabetes, and 88 million have prediabetes. The adults who had been diagnosed were found to also be smokers, overweight, and physically inactive. Though the diagnoses among adults have decreased over the past 10 years or so, the numbers for juvenile diabetes cases are on the rise.
According to Breastcancer.org, one in eight women living in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their life. This year, 276,480 new cases are expected with more than 40,000 succumbing to the disease.
Congresswoman Slaughter used her position and platform to bring awareness to domestic violence and demand Congress take measures that would affect critical social change. For four consecutive years, she went before the House of Representatives to declare October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
